Obliging justice? Shahbaz Sharif raises judges’ salaries by 10%

On the advice of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, President Dr. Arif Alvi authorized a 10% increase in the salaries of Supreme Court and High Court judges, as well as the High Judiciary Allowance.

According to a statement published by the Presidency’s Press Wing on Thursday, the President gave his consent under Article 205 of the Constitution on the advice of the Prime Minister.
Finance Minister Miftah Ismail promised that the Prime Minister will at some point announce austerity measures in the face of the prevalent financial crisis. Social media users, however, have questioned the government’s austerity measures given the increase in salaries of judges.
One user tweeted that, while the fiscal budget in Pakistan brings suffering to the middle class in the form of inflation, the elite class gets benefits in the form of an increase in salaries and allowances.
A user with a handle named Osama Siddique seems shocked with another raise in the salaries of already highly-paid judges.
Mr. Javed complains that the increase in salaries of justices is not justified as they have millions of cases pending & continue to prolong them.
Another user calls the raise “height of callousness on part of both judiciary & PM”. Mr. Khawaja Omar says that the salaries and allowances of what he believes to be an incompetent judiciary should have been slashed in half.
