In violation of the law of the land, the letter says, Imran Riaz Khan carries automatic weapons & armed guards for the purpose of intimidating & harassing the general public.
The letter adds that there’s no imminent threat to Imran’s life nor has he any enmity with anyone & therefore “requests ” the cancelation as “genuine on the account of unlawful use/display of weapons”.
The Deputy Commissioner claims that the licensee was called for a personal meeting with the undersigned on 25 June which he did not attend.
Citing Section 12(1)(A) of the Arms Ordinance of 1965, the Deputy Commissioner has the power to suspend/cancel licenses based on the grounds specified in writing after giving the licensee a chance to show cause against the proposed cancellation/suspension of the license.
According to the Deputy Commissioner’s letter, Imran’s guns are not registered at a local police station.
However, the journalist disputes the charges and claims that he obtained firearm licenses as a result of life-threat alerts from Pakistan’s security services. He further alleges that the permits were issued and that the local police were aware of them.
The journalist in question is a fierce critic of the government’s policies. Earlier, multiple journalists critical of the current government were nominated in FIRs under sedition laws.
“After the cowardly action of the Punjab government, the police have taken away my legal weapons license and security weapon. According to my source, the rest of the action will be done today or tomorrow night,” Imran tweeted.
